Speculative: moon helmet

Major Studio Object

to critically consider the psychological relationships that people have with objects; how an interface creates meaning; how it structures & facilitates relationships; what an affordance is and how it affects usage & meaning.

stage1:proposal

date:FEB 14TH - FEB 20TH

GOAL: Consider what are you making, and why?

proposal 1: moon clock

Background:If the moon is used as a transit place for interplanetary navigation, it will form a residential area on the moon. In the long run, the moon will form an independent time system.

Design Insight: The calendar system is not only related to the physical theorem but also related to human activities of daily life. People are used to measuring the scale of time with cycles.

Proposal: Design a set of interesting and logic moon calendar + clock system as a time scale for the moon human. Reference: the cosmic position of the moon and the autobiographical cycle of the revolution and the human life behavior on the moon.

proposal 2: ANTI-ITCHY HELMET

Background:A lot of inconveniences accompany the wearing of an astronaut helmet. For example, you can’t just take it off to scratch a simple itch on your nose. To remedy this, a velcro patch is stuck on the inside to serve as a scratcher.

Design Insight: Wearing a helmet is equivalent to isolating the senses of the face. Sensory feelings are very important for people's emotional experience as well as inter-people communication.

Proposal: Design a precise and interesting "third hand" in the moon helmet. You can touch the face yourself or touch each other's face with the handle.

proposal 3: outer-space ELEGANT RESTROOM

In 1961, astronaut Alan Shepard - the first astronaut - was forced to pee on the launch pad.

reference: some of the most hilarious restroom in the world !

reference: One-way transparent restroom at London street.

stage2:prototype 1

date:FEB 20th - feb 25TH

GOAL: Rapidly produce a prototype of one of proposed objects

test play in class

people's recation:

coNS:

  • Device is not functional work, still manual control
  • The focus of the helmet is loose, maybe pick one feature
  • The shape of the robot is controversial

PROS:

  • Physical helmet creates a good atmosphere
  • The concept of scratching is particularly interesting
  • the feel of the handle and the sound of mechanical rotation are good

stage3:prototype 2

date:FEB 25th - march 3TH

GOAL: Rapidly produce a second prototype of proposed objects

Refine Chance:

Choose a feature for further optimization. We choose the interesting experience of scratch face which is also our original aspiration.

Improve Proposal:

Make the hand inside helmet functional work and test this indirect subjective manipulation of the sensory experience by oneself and by two people.

Design Highlight:

The interaction of using “third hand“ to scratch face is a way different experience, compared by using hands or a outbody tool. The subtle sensational feeling is a unique and worth exploring.
